save20 money-savers that add up

Real Simple and CNN lays out 20 money saving tips that add up. Think about the following and how you can save.

Do you:

  2. Pay an annual fee on your credit card?
  3. Pay airlines for extras?
  4. Use cash to pay tolls?
  5. Subscribe to cable, phone and internet with 3 different providers?
  6. Pay just the minimum on your credit cards?
  7. A cell phone bill that doesn’t meet your needs?
  8. Pay online shipping fees?
  9. Take your time to use your gift cards?
  10. Leave the water running?
  11. Have 6 months worth of emergency savings?
  12. Take advantage of your flex spending account?
  13. Bounce checks?
  14. Have a supplemental life insurance policy?
  15. Pay for credit reports?
  16. Eat out on your vacations?
  17. Think that “all-inclusive” means “all-inclusive”?
  18. Have too much insurance?
  19. Put extra money into your house before putting it on the market?
  20. Make frequent trips to the ATM for cash?

This is a great read that made me think about some not so obvious changes we can make to better save.

Why We Buy

shoppingPsychology Today did a great piece a while back on Why We Buy…

I am a shop-a-holic. I know I am. This is good information. Maybe, just maybe it’ll help my issue (well at least this 1 issue).

How can we become more vigilant?

There are two types of consumers. The high-involvement consumer makes lists of what they want each time they visit the store. For them, penciling in the exact number of what they want to buy can keep them from purchasing more. There are also the impulse shopper who buy what he wants when he wants it. He should try to remember that every time he sees a number in a store sign, he’s likely to buy at least one more item than intended.

Save Money By Renting Your College Text Books

collegetextbooksIt’s been a few years since I’ve had to ante up the money for college text books. I have a sister who is in college (well most semesters :) ). She calls griping about the hundreds every time she has to drop to several hundred dollars to pay for her college text books.

You can save several hundreds of dollars by renting your textbooks rather than purchasing them. By renting, you are shedding off 50-80% off the retail price. I stumbled upon this idea tonight and thought this was brilliant. 10 years ago, I so could of used this – and would should I ever go back to school.

Here are a few sites I came across offering this service.

Chegg

CampusBookRentals.com

Sell Your Text Books

Both services also offered a college text book purchase program. If you have a few old books laying around your house – get a quote and see if it’s worth selling for a few extra dollars.

Don’t forget about EBay’s Half.com. This place is another avenue to sell your books (or if you are in the market to purchase)

STOP USING 4-1-1 PEOPLE!

iphone

Your phone company – whether it be a landline or a cell phone – makes HUGE bucks from you dialing the digits 4-1-1. Do me and your wallet a favor – either memorize the below – or program it into your phone.

When you need a business listing – do NOT pay the $1 – $2 a call for a phone number.  Google, the great – has 2 products that will rock your socks off and save you some money.

Google offers a FREE 4-1-1 service via voice prompted phone number – or by text!

1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411)

From Google’s site:

Call your favorite local business. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411), then name the business you’re looking for and where it’s located. GOOG-411 will find it and connect you to it for free.

Local business information through SMS. Say “text message” after you hear the exact location of the business you’re looking for, and GOOG-411 will send you a text message with the business’s address and phone number.

No more 411 charges. GOOG-411 is a free service – even the call connecting you to the business you’re looking for is free. (Carrier charges for the use of your mobile device may apply.)

Text GOOGLE (466453) for phone numbers (and a heck of a whole lot more!)

From local business listings to stock quotes, you can get the information you’re looking for with Google SMS.
